Cosmetic Dentistry

Smiles matter more than we realize. Volumes of research confirm the influential role of smiles in our relationships and our self-esteem. If you’re confident, you smile more. If you smile more, you feel more confident. But what if you don’t want to flash those pearly whites because you’re embarrassed? The effects of an unattractive smile may ripple through your life. Fortunately, a growing range of options enables anyone to enjoy a stunning new smile. Dr. Namrata Shah’s passion for enhancing smiles brings you the best in modern dentistry.

Cosmetic dental treatments can:
  • Brighten stained or discolored teeth

  • Repair cracks or fractures

  • Fill gaps between teeth

  • Correct overcrowding

  • Reshape teeth

  • Replace missing teeth

  • Replace old metallic restorations, such as fillings and crowns

Porcelain Veneers

Custom-crafted to each tooth, veneers provide an artist’s touch to your smile. Regardless of your vision for your smile, chances are veneers can help. When today’s modern materials meet our passion for cosmetic excellence, you’ll be amazed at what you see smiling back at you in the mirror.

Composite Fillings

Cavities, chips, and fractures can occur on any tooth surface throughout the mouth. Composite filling material is tooth-colored and provides a versatile solution to many common problems. Blended into a prepared area, the composite polishes to a smooth, undetectable finish.

Onlays

Teeth rarely fracture predictably. Sometimes a break is too big for a filling, but not big enough for a crown. Porcelain onlays provide an excellent solution for teeth that need extra reinforcement without being covered entirely. Bonded into place, they provide years of natural feel, function, and look beautiful too.

Teeth Whitening

Nothing boosts your confidence like a terrific smile. Over time, stains can dull the color of your teeth. Professional whitening systems provide the ultimate in whitening results, quickly removing years of discoloration.

Cleaning & Prevention

Keeping a regular preventative maintenance schedule with your hygienist and Dr. Namrata Shah at Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills helps you prevent not only tooth decay and periodontal disease but also avoid costly procedures and extra time in the hygiene chair.

A regular home prevention routine usually consists of brushing at least twice a day and flossing at least once per day. But did you know there are other tools to make taking care of your mouth a little easier? Depending on your needs, there are special kinds of toothpaste, rinses, and even flossing aids that can help you keep your smile bright and healthy for years to come. Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills can help you find the best tools to enhance your daily hygiene routine making your professional cleaning appointments shorter and less stressful.

Another significant factor in your oral health is your diet. Acidic foods and drinks can erode enamel just as a balanced diet can help keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy.

Regular professional exams and cleanings, a dedicated at-home hygiene routine, and a healthy, balanced diet can help prevent minor issues from becoming major procedures.

Oral Cancer Screening

At each visit, our team does a medical history update and reviews any changes (even subtle ones). Even the smallest change in the soft tissues of your mouth will be examined closely. Early detection of oral cancer saves many lives each year, and our team is highly trained to detect even the smallest abnormality.

Home Care

While excellent oral health is a partnership between you and our team, we depend on you to make sure your teeth and gums stay strong and healthy between appointments. Together we can create an individual plan with the latest tools and knowledge to help protect your smile.

Family Dentistry

When you step into Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills in Lewisville, TX, you’ll know you’ve found the perfect place for your family’s care.

Our team loves helping kids grow into healthy adults. Dr. Namrata Shah knows that early experiences influence the value children place on their oral health as adults. One negative experience can affect a child’s outlook on dentistry for the rest of their life. You can be sure your child will have a great experience at Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills.

The services offered at Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills ensure that patients of all ages feel welcome. From the earliest check-ups to orthodontic evaluations, our dentist listens to your concerns and guide you through every stage.

Teen’s Dentistry

Most parents know the teen years present unique challenges. When it comes to your teen’s dental health, rapid changes seem to happen almost daily. A good partnership with our team can help you and your teen survive these sometimes difficult years.

Adult’s Dentistry

Sometimes dental problems follow otherwise healthy people through life. Understanding the causes of dental disease can eliminate the frustration that builds as teeth deteriorate. Creating a customized preventive routine can leave you looking forward to your dental visits.

Sealants

Deep crevices run across the chewing surface of molars. Even though a toothbrush can skim these surfaces, bacteria still settle into the narrow grooves beyond the bristles’ reach. Cavities may form and end up affecting the tooth’s nerve without warning, destroying valuable tooth structure. Protecting the grooves with a resin sealant may help prevent decay in your child’s back teeth.

Ortho Screenings

Metal grins fill the pages of many high school yearbooks. But braces offer benefits at many different stages of life. Identifying problems at a young age allows for early intervention which can often reduce how long your child is in treatment. Monitoring growth and development at your child’s regular preventive visits are just a part of our commitment to your family’s dental health.

Extractions & Preservation

While our goal is to help you maintain your teeth for a lifetime, sometimes teeth need to be removed. Wisdom teeth, extra teeth, or very crowded teeth present situations that may mean treatment involving removal. In some cases, severely decayed or cracked teeth, or those missing large amounts of supporting bone leave extraction as the only viable option.

Regardless of your dental needs, your comfort is always our number one priority. We’ll discuss your unique situation and determine the best way to help you receive the treatment you need. Few patients look forward to any minor surgical procedure, but today’s methods provide the safest, least invasive care possible.

Extractions

Despite the best intentions, teeth sometimes need to be removed. Regardless of the situation, this minor surgical procedure can be brought together in a way that considers your short and long-term concerns. From anxiety control to planning for tooth replacement, we’ll factor in every aspect of your case.

Root Canals

While many patients are concerned about root canals, modern dentistry often makes this procedure quick and simple. Infected teeth in danger of extraction can be disinfected and filled with a sealer, offering a safe, effective solution for a problematic situation.

Oral Surgery

Minor surgical procedures are sometimes necessary to treat dental issues. Defects in the bone or supporting gum tissue may require repair with simple, yet precise surgical techniques.

Bone Grafting

The bone around your teeth is special and doesn’t regenerate when it’s lost. Your teeth rely on this bony foundation to remain stable and functional. Sometimes we can repair these defects by adding bone grafting materials.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth causing pain and infection give a clear warning sign that treatment needs consideration. But some problems can also slowly develop without your awareness. If you’re an adult with wisdom teeth, be sure they’re evaluated periodically for changes using a panoramic x-ray.

Orthodontics

For most patients, straight teeth equal a beautiful smile. But did you know that a properly aligned bite is also healthier? Overlapped, crooked, or rotated teeth create a daily cleaning challenge. Helping even a couple straggling teeth find their proper place can leave you with a healthier mouth.

Straight teeth aren’t just for kids! Adults often make the most dedicated orthodontic patients, and it’s never too late to discuss the options for a bright, straight smile. If you’re not sure traditional braces are for you, don’t worry. Invisible methods can work extremely well in many cases, and Dr. Namrata Shah can help you explore the possibilities.

Orthodontics involves teeth straightening while maintaining proper jaw alignment, combining beauty and function. Identifying problems when a child is growing may allow for easier treatment, but it’s never too late to discuss ways to enhance your smile!

Invisalign®

A straight smile has never been easier to achieve. Clear plastic trays, known as aligners, can work the magic of braces without the metal look and feel of traditional braces. Combined with sophisticated 3D software, this technology brings a new smile within reach for most adults and mature teens.

6 Month Smiles

Six Month Smiles is a clear bracket and wire system that delivers results in a shorter time frame. Patients have experienced straighter teeth in as little as 4-9 months, and have been thrilled with the results.

Sedation Dentistry

Many people experience dental anxiety before and during dental procedures. It’s okay to feel nervous or even fearful when anticipating an appointment. We understand that our patients aren’t all the same. We have many methods available to provide you with a relaxed, comfortable dental experience.

The most common forms of sedation used in dentistry are inhaled, oral, and intravenous sedation. While sedation dentistry makes the procedure more tolerable for you, it is important to understand that they are not painkillers, and you will still require the use of dental anesthetic.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas, an inhaled sedative, brings one of the safest and easiest sedation techniques to nearly any procedure. Patients from young to old may benefit by simply breathing in and out.

Oral Appliances

One of our goals at Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills is to provide the most conservative treatment possible in every situation. Oral appliances offer simple, non-invasive treatment for a variety of conditions. Regardless of the application, every appliance we prescribe is custom-crafted just for you.

Whether we’re treating nighttime sleep grinding, a diagnosed case of obstructive sleep apnea, bite problems, or other jaw joint disorders, appliance therapy may be a valuable complement to your treatment. Dr. Namrata Shah uses a variety of innovative designs depending on your treatment goals and preferences.

Teeth Grinding

Teeth are the hardest substance in our bodies and can withstand a tremendous amount of force. But damage can occur, especially when grinding forces start to wear them away. A habit of nighttime clenching or grinding will harm teeth, muscles, and jaw joints over time.

Technology

Technology in the dental field is ever-changing and Dr. Namrata Shah enjoys learning how to integrate state-of-the-art equipment into her practice. Utilizing the latest advancements in dentistry allows Dr. Namrata Shah to treat patients with less pain and in fewer visits. This equals less time in the dental chair and a more comfortable experience from start to finish.

Dr. Namrata Shah and her team spend many hours each year training and taking advanced courses to ensure they deliver the best care, safely. Employing the latest technology means consistent results, so you’ll know what to expect at each visit. You’ll find that modern dental care with Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills leaves you smiling.

At Hillcrest Dental at Castle Hills in Lewisville, TX, you’ll discover dental care at its highest level; technology, advanced training, and compassionate service blended perfectly together.

Intra-oral camera

A picture explains what words never can, especially when it comes to your teeth. An intra-oral camera can take pictures with such detail, it can show cracks and stress marks in a tooth that can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Digital X-ray

Digital films with rich detail and dramatically reduced radiation exposure offer the ultimate in safety and diagnostic capability.

Emergency Dentistry

We are here to help you when dental emergencies arise.

Dental emergencies are never fun – or convenient. But we’re here to help in your time of need. If you have a dental emergency during our business hours, please feel free to stop by our office for an evaluation. If your dental emergency happens after hours, call our office (972-833-4700) leave a message. We will get back to you on the next working day. We understand that some dental issues and pain need to be dealt with promptly, that’s why we give you an opportunity to schedule the next earliest available appointment online using our ‘Request Appointment’ link below”

Below you will find helpful information regarding certain dental emergencies.

Loss of a Tooth

Follow the steps below to manage a lost tooth, and then call our office immediately after.

  • Handle the tooth by the top or crown, being careful not to touch or wipe off the root of the tooth. If the tooth is dirty rinse the tooth using milk or water if milk is not available. Do not scrub the tooth! If possible, place the tooth back into its original location. Be sure it’s facing the correct direction.

  • If you’re not able to place the tooth back into the socket, put it in an Optimal Storage Environment (OSE) kit, milk or water (water only if both of the other two options are not available). If none of these are accessible, store the tooth between your cheek and gums or in a clean cloth.

Chipped/Fractured Teeth

Chipped teeth that don’t cause pain are rarely considered a dental emergency.  If you chip a tooth, contact our office or stop by as soon as possible.

Fractured or cracked teeth are considered a dental emergency. The trauma that caused the external crack usually indicates trauma within the tooth, as well.  If you are experiencing pain or have a large, visible fracture on a tooth, contact us as soon as possible and follow these steps:

  • Rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water.

  • Use gauze to apply pressure to any site of bleeding for 10 minutes or until the bleeding stops.

  • Place a cold compress on any site where facial trauma may have occurred.

  • Take an over-the-counter painkiller to reduce pain. Follow directions on the bottle.

Swelling/Toothache

If you are experiencing a toothache or visible swelling associated with a toothache, make an appointment as soon as possible. In the meantime, the following steps may help relieve pain:

  • Rinse with warm salt water to dislodge any food debris.

  • Clean the area around the tooth with gentle brushing and flossing if the site is not too painful.

  • Do NOT place aspirin at the site of the toothache. This may cause a chemical burn of the gum tissue.

  • Apply a cold compress on the outside of the cheek. If there’s visible swelling, apply a cold compress alternating 10 minutes on, 5 minutes off.

Tissue Injuries

For soft tissue injuries such as lacerations (cuts), the following steps should be taken to minimize risk of pain or infection.

  • Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water.

  • With gauze, apply firm, gentle pressure for 15 minutes.

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the affected area to control bruising and swelling.

  • Contact us immediately if bleeding can’t be controlled or if you have a large laceration associated with significant dental trauma (loss of a tooth, swelling).

Teeth Cleaning

While dental emergencies can strike anyone, anytime, our patients who commit to regular preventive care appointments usually experience fewer problems over time. Professional cleanings with a registered dental hygienist allow us to take a proactive approach to your dental health and address issues while they are small. Despite your best efforts, deposits of mineralized plaque, known as tartar, adhere to areas of the teeth. These deposits create a nice home for millions of harmful bacteria. Left unchecked, they flood toxins into the gums resulting in devastating chronic problems and can even result in the loss of teeth.

When tartar is removed at your professional hygiene appointment, it doesn’t have the opportunity to produce irreversible damage. We use professional instruments and prescription strength polishing paste that gently buffs away stain and plaque, leaving your teeth ultra-smooth and shiny. Since discoloration settles into the enamel of your teeth over time, this helps slow yellowing while creating a glassy surface for better cleaning.

Children’s Dentistry

Tooth decay often begins at an early age, making young children particularly susceptible. Nearly half of children between the ages of 2-11 have experienced tooth decay while 32% of kids between the ages of 9-11 develop cavities in their permanent teeth. Major contributing factors to this public health problem include baby formula with added sugar and heavily-sugared fruit juices. Even breast milk can cause cavities in baby teeth because of the natural sugars present.

Care for baby teeth should begin as soon as the first tooth appears. We recommend that you bring your child in for an exam no later than his or her first birthday. Regular six-month checkups will put kids on a schedule like most adults, establishing a routine that will last a lifetime.

The following early steps can help guard your child against tooth decay, even before their first dental visit:

  • Your baby’s teeth should always be rinsed with water or wiped down with a damp cloth after feeding, especially before they fall asleep. Milk or formula residue left in the mouth can promote decay even in the youngest patients.

  • Try to wean your child off bottle feeding by their first birthday. This helps avoid decay and minimizes the chance of jaw growth problems from excessive sucking.

  • Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Even if it’s barely poking through the gum, a tooth can develop decay if not cleaned properly. Start by brushing with a soft bristled brush and water and ask your dentist when it’s ok to begin using a small amount of toothpaste.

  • Help your child brush and remember that kids don’t have the dexterity to clean their teeth on their own until after they can tie their shoes.

  • Don’t give bottles of sugary drinks or milk before bedtime.

  • If you do choose to offer sugary beverages, have your child use a straw, so the teeth to have less contact with the liquid.

  • Try to limit the overall sugary foods your child eats and drinks.

Invisalign®

For ultimate camouflage, tray or aligner systems offer a modern straightening method. A series of clear plastic trays are made using 3D digital models of your teeth. Medical-grade plastic without wires, metal, springs, or rubber bands gently move your teeth into place. Continuous pressure on specific teeth with each aligner means less discomfort and, in many cases, shortened treatment times. Your provider dispenses several sets of aligners at a time, allowing you to change to a new tray at home every two weeks.

Removable trays can be set aside for short periods allowing for normal eating and cleaning. Enjoying an apple without the intrusion of brackets and wires works well for many patients. And the smooth plastic surface offers a comfort level to the tongue and cheeks unequaled by other forms of straightening.

Committing to consistent wear, at least 22 hours each day, helps ensure the success of your treatment. While clear aligners work extremely well for adults, a responsible teen can be a suitable candidate too.

Invisalign® can:

  • Straighten your teeth in stealth mode
  • Allow you to eat the foods you like during treatment
  • Make cleaning and brushing easy
  • Close eye-catching gaps
  • Correct overlap/crowding issues

Something For Everyone

While aligner treatment works for 90% of straightening cases, some tooth movements may not be possible. Today’s orthodontics offer more choices than ever. Dr. Namrata Shah can help you discover the path to a straighter smile.

You may want to discuss adding whitening to your plan. Sometimes the beauty of porcelain lifts a straight smile to another level or may even offer an alternative to orthodontics.

The smile you’ve always dreamed of may be closer than you think with flexible payment options. More insurance plans are choosing to cover clear aligners as an acceptable method of orthodontic treatment. Check with our office today for more information.

Dental Implants

A long-lasting choice, implant-supported dentistry brings you as close to growing new teeth as possible. Expertly placed in the same bone that once supported teeth, you’ll enjoy the strength and function of a natural tooth. Modern porcelains produce a result so life-like, you may forget they aren’t your natural teeth. Dentures can also be attached to implants when more than one missing tooth needs to be replaced. The stability and sense of confidence you develop with implants will leave you smiling.

Dr. Namrata Shah uses the latest technology to collect all the data necessary to help plan your restorative case. Digital x-rays, 3D mapping, models, and photographs prove valuable. Dr. Namrata Shah uses highly regarded specialists to bring all components of your case together. But at all times, she serves as the quarterback of the entire plan.

Surgical Implants

Many patients find the procedure of implant placement easier than they anticipated. Modern dental anesthetic numbs the site, and experienced hands carefully place the implant. A tiny guide hole provides a path for threading a small implant cylinder into place. The sterile piece is inserted into an exact location, and a smooth cover, or healing cap, protects the implant during the healing period.

In some cases, a temporary or permanent crown may be inserted at the time of surgery.

Implants can’t withstand normal bite forces until the bone has integrated fully into the implant body. Dr. Namrata Shah will help you decide what will work best during the initial healing period, ensuring you’re able to function while still protecting your implants. This period usually lasts 3-6 months as the bone grows around the implant. Most patients experience minimal discomfort after placement, especially compared to an extraction.

Restorative Implants

A well thought out treatment plan that includes implants creates the opportunity for different restoration options.

After the healing period, crowns or bridges are custom-made and attached to the implants with small screws or dental cement.

One of Healthcare’s Greatest Values

Even with all the benefits, the cost of dental implants are an important consideration. When your case brings together the latest imaging, advanced training, and modern materials, this service offers one of the best values in health care. Compared to the replacement of other parts of the body, most dental implant procedures can be done at a small fraction of those costs. Most patients carry on with normal activities right away and usually enjoy a lifetime of normal chewing, bite stability, and appearance. We know the cost of dental implants is an important part of creating a complete plan that works for you.

The cost of dental implant services involves several critical factors unique to each patient. A fee quoted without careful evaluation and treatment planning may not only be incomplete, but doesn’t consider what’s best for your mouth as an individual. The doctor customizes your treatment plan after careful evaluation your current oral conditions, needs, wants, and budget.

One thing is certain: You’ll get the highest value possible in modern implant dentistry. That means years of natural function and a smile you are proud to show. We look forward to discussing how we can partner together for the best solution for you!

Implants and Dentures

Not many years ago, losing a tooth left you with few options for replacement. While permanent teeth should provide a lifetime of function, it doesn’t always end up that way. They may be lost from an accident, decay, or gum disease. Since teeth start as a full set, even one missing tooth may affect the whole makeup of your mouth’s delicate balance. As teeth slowly lean and migrate, wear and cracking from excessive forces often create escalating problems.

When it’s time to replace missing teeth, whether it’s one or a full set, several options might be available to you. Dental implants often give you the best opportunity to enjoy normal chewing and a full smile, although other options deserve consideration.

We know it’s not always easy for you to sort through the complicated possibilities. Dr. Namrata Shah’s background in restorative dentistry allows her to develop solutions for every situation.

Implants

Replacing missing teeth with implants brings your mouth back to full function and well-being. Stunning porcelains replicate natural teeth perfectly, whether it’s one tooth or many. Single crowns or complex bridges can be supported by implants, with solutions for every situation.

Full or Partial Dentures

Sometimes a removable appliance is the best way to replace missing teeth. Dr. Namrata Shah can help you decide whether a partial denture or a complete denture would restore your mouth to its optimal function and appearance. Sometimes a combination of dental implants and dentures are used for unprecedented stability and confidence.

Porcelain Bridges

Whenever you drive across a bridge, you’re being supported by the same principles that support a dental bridge. Crowned teeth on either side of a space are called abutments. They support an artificial tooth, called a pontic. While a bridge lasts for many years, sometimes the strain of supporting one or more missing teeth can cause the abutments themselves to weaken and may lead to more missing teeth.

A Better Bridge

In many cases, dental implants offer a better alternative, eliminating most of the load-bearing strain you see in traditional bridge abutments. When carefully placed in the bone, an implant mimics the root of a tooth. They bear the load that the natural teeth used to hold, sparing the neighboring teeth from excessive forces. In some cases, two implants may be used to build a bridge.

Dr. Namrata Shah knows how to bring the puzzle pieces together to fit any scenario regardless of the scope of your treatment.

Root Canals

Toothaches are a vivid reminder that teeth aren’t just pieces of hard tissue floating around in the gums. They are intricately formed sensory organs with layers of dentin and enamel protecting a living pulp. Coursing through the tooth’s pulp is a vital bundle of nerves and blood vessels providing nutrients and sensation to each tooth. As long as the pulp stays healthy, you’re rarely aware of the systems at work.

Tooth pain can be especially alarming, but it’s meant to warn you that something’s not right. Pain tells us that the bundle of nerves and vessels inside your tooth is irritated, damaged, or under attack.

A deep cavity can give bacteria access to the inner nerve bundle. In some cases, a significant infection, called an abscess, may develop in your jaw without any symptoms at all. If Dr. Namrata Shah determines that the nerve won’t recover or if an infection is present, then root canal therapy may be suggested.

Modern anesthetics provide powerful numbing for the gentle removal of the inflamed nerve inside the tooth. The nerve canal undergoes disinfection and careful shaping, and a sealer fills the internal space. A filling or crown over the tooth helps return the tooth to its original function.

Are Root Canals Safe?

Internet articles continue to circulate claiming adverse health effects from root canals, despite years of research proving otherwise. Many of these claims rest on false theories put forward decades ago without any scientific basis. In fact, one popular Facebook article sounding a false alarm shakily rests on a 100-year-old study tossed aside long ago.

The American Association of Endodontists stays abreast of all research and can support the safety of this vital service. In fact, new techniques and materials make root canal treatment more successful than ever.

Porcelain Crowns

Modern dentistry offers more options than ever to help you restore and maintain an optimal level of health. While the strength and beauty of materials continue to advance, the skill of the practitioner makes a significant difference. Dr. Namrata Shah uses the latest techniques, bringing even the most damaged mouths back to full health.

Sometimes teeth are damaged because of cavities, heavy bite forces, or trauma. If a root canal is needed to salvage a compromised nerve, the tooth may be especially fragile. Dental crowns, or caps, allow these teeth to be rebuilt and covered with materials that mimic nature. Not only are most “capped” teeth indistinguishable from natural teeth, but they’re also extremely secure and comfortable.

Crowns can be crafted to repair a single tooth, multiple teeth (including the entire mouth), or in conjunction with dental implants to fill a space. In fact, when missing teeth enter the equation, special consideration might be given to placing a dental bridge or implants.

One Simple Step

Once your case is planned, it will take about two appointments before you leave with a fully restored tooth. At the first visit, the teeth are gently prepared. Next, the doctor sends your case to a specialized lab to create a dental masterpiece. A temporary crown allows you to function normally until the permanent crown arrives for placement. This typically takes 2-3 weeks.

After hours of custom craftwork in the lab, you’ll return for a second appointment. The dentist will try-in and evaluate the appearance and fit of the crown before bonding it into place. Minor adjustments to your bite and a final polish leave you with one of the finest restorations in dentistry.

Sleep Apnea

We’re concerned about the overall health of our patients, including their sleep health. Many people suffer needlessly from dangerous sleep disruptive disorders that keep them from getting enough oxygen at night. The risk of a heart attack is 23 times more likely than average with a sleep disorder, and 92% of stroke victims live unknowingly with sleep apnea before having a stroke. Our training allows us to offer you education and treatment surrounding sleep health most simply and cost-effectively possible.

Estimates suggest that more than twelve million Americans have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Most cases are still undiagnosed, contributing to diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, and traffic accidents related to drowsy driving. Dentistry serves a vital role in treating this silent epidemic. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends oral appliances as primary therapy for the treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea and for patients with severe sleep apnea who can’t tolerate CPAP treatment.

What is OSA?

OSA is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep due to a blockage in the airway. Obstructions occur when throat muscles, the tongue, tonsils, or the soft palate relax and cover the airway, preventing breathing. The obstruction results in a severe drop in blood oxygen levels throughout the night.

OSA is typically diagnosed using a sleep study. During a sleep study, a sleep physician monitors brain activity and body system functions while a patient rests overnight at a sleep lab. The specialist evaluates the data collected to diagnose sleep disorders and recommend treatment. If prescribed by the sleep doctor, a dentist trained in sleep medicine works with them to treat obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy. In some cases, a home sleep study may also be possible instead of reporting to a sleep lab.

How Is OSA Treated?

Treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea may involve surgery, CPAP or BiPAP machines, or oral appliance therapy. Oral appliances provide the least invasive option and are often a good choice for treatment of mild to moderate OSA. A carefully calibrated appliance like a CPAP or BiPAP can comfortably help hold the jaw in a precise position throughout the night.

All treatment recommendations should be made in conjunction with your sleep physician. If appliance therapy is selected, it’s essential the right positioning is used to maintain an open airway.
